Ethos:
In Blackfish, ethos is used a number of times. After a whale attack in Victoria, British Columbia that resulted in the death of an employee, one whale from that park named Tilikum was sent to Orlando, Florida’s SeaWorld. The employees there were told not to worry because Tilikum was not one of the whales involved in the death. In the film, the main people that were interviewed throughout discussed the incident. But they also brought in witnesses to improve their credibility that SeaWorld was lying. The two witnesses told the camera that it was evident which whale killed the girl, and it was Tilikum – his collapsed dorsal fin was evident and easily revealed the culprit. Bringing in witnesses helped Blackfish’s credibility and improved their trustworthiness with the audience.

Logos:
Logos is shown several times throughout Blackfish as the film questions a lot of the facts that SeaWorld provides. Recently, a 103-year-old whale was found off the coast of Canada. In the film, footage was shown of SeaWorld employees stating that whales tend to live to around 50 years of age and have shorter lives in the wild because of the better care they provide. In 2013 when this film was created, the participants in the film said this fact was not true and that whales tended to live to around 100 years of age and have the same lifespan as a human. Now, in 2014 the discovery of the 103-year-old whale is more proof that SeaWorld provides false information. In the film, they also focus in on what information SeaWorld released to the public after deaths. Some individuals were blamed for their deaths while others deaths were merely accidents and the whales were not being aggressive whatsoever.

Pathos:
Throughout Blackfish, Pathos is used many times. One prominent time Pathos was used was when the film showed footage of the orca hunters capturing the babies. Once they had captured the babies, they cut the nets loose where the mothers were being contained but they didn’t leave, instead the mothers stayed and cried for their babies. A similar event to this was when a baby living in SeaWorld with its mother was taken and moved to another park. Clips of the mother crying were then showed. A specialist talked about how these cries were never heard before and how the mother was trying to communicate with her baby in all ways possible. During these scenes they cut out all other music or voices and just focus in on the cries of the whales. These scenes are heart wrenching and disturbing to think a human could be capable of letting this happen. Blackfish uses many clips of scenes where the whales are treated poorly which helps support the idea that parks and zoos like SeaWorld should be closed. As well as the depressing scenes in the movie, there are also frightening ones. Blackfish shows footage of whales nearly killing humans in certain scenes and what happens just before some die. These parts of the movies make viewers even more disturbed and question why humans are allowing this to continue today even after it’s shown that killer whales can become aggressive and psychotic when held in captivity.
